Root canal treatment is a way to preserve a tooth that has suffered a deep cavity, infection or impact injury. This treatment enables a patient to keep the tooth even though the soft inner tissue of the tooth has been harmed. We are pleased to be able to offer our expertise to patients who need root canal treatment.
While the enamel of a tooth is hard and bone-like, the inside of each tooth is soft and alive, with a rich supply of both nerves and blood. If bacteria break through the enamel and reach the inside of the tooth, the soft, live tissues within become inflamed, often causing pain. These damaged, soft tissues need to be cleaned out to preserve the hard structure of the tooth as well as the health of the gum and bone in the area.
Bacteria can reach these soft tissues because of a hard blow, a deep cavity or fracture from biting on something hard.
We start a root canal by thoroughly numbing the area to be treated. We then create an opening in the tooth so soft tissues can be cleaned out. Each tooth has between one and four nerve and blood vessel channels reaching to the ends of the roots. These are called “canals.” We will clean and smooth the inside of these canals and then fill them with sterile materials.
Next, we fill in the opening which is just like providing a filling for a cavity. This tooth may be sore for a few days after this treatment, but it is normally not problematic for most patients. We suggest that our patients avoid chewy or hard foods for a few days.
We recommend that teeth treated with root canal treatment receive a protective crown. The loss of blood and nerve supply means that a tooth will become brittle and a new crown protects the tooth from harm.
When patients are anxious about receiving root canal treatments, we assure them that we take care to keep them comfortable as their treatment progresses.
As your treatment proceeds, we will listen to your needs and ensure you are comfortable. You have only to tell us if you need us to pause for a moment. We’ll also explain each step of your treatment as needed. Our goal is making every treatment the most positive experience possible.
For root canal treatment or any dental care you need, please let us know how we can help. We are honored to help many patients from Brewster, Brewster Hill, Carmel, Peach Lake, Southeast and other portions of Putnam County and we look forward to helping your family, too
